Teacher: OK, so Pete is going to give us his presentation today.
So, Pete, can you come up here please, to the front of the class?
Who is your presentation about, Pete?
Pete: Erm, it's about someone called Dorothy Stang.
She was an American woman who lived in Brazil.
Teacher: OK, Pete, tell us all about her and why she's your hero.
Pete: Right, OK.
Well, Dorothy Stang was born in 1931.
She was born in a place called Dayton in Ohio in the USA.
One day she decided to change her life.
She wanted to help poor people somewhere.
So in 1966 she went to live and work in Brazil, in a state called Pará
Teacher: Where in Brazil is that, Pete?
Pete: It's in the north.
Part of the Amazon forest is there, erm, it's right up in the north of Brazil.
Teacher: Good, thanks.
Go on.
Pete: Right, so, she lived in a town called Anapú and in the 1970s she started to work with small farmers there.
She tried to protect the forest, she had lots of enemies, people who didn't like her and wanted to kill her.
Girl: Why?
Pete: Well, a lot of people wanted to cut down the trees, they wanted money for the wood, but it was illegal and Dorothy was one of the people who tried to stop it.
Girl: Oh, right.
Pete: Anyway, Dorothy was sure people wanted to kill her.
But she always said: 'I don't want to run away, I want to stay here and save the people and the trees.'
So she stayed, she didn't leave Anapú.
And in 2004, she was 'Woman of the Year' in Pará state.
But one day in 2005, erm it was the 12th of February in fact, 2005, she was on her way to a meeting, there were two farmers with her, and two men walked up to her and they pulled out a gun and they killed her.
Boy: What about the two farmers?
Did they kill them too?
Pete: No, they escaped, and they helped the police to find the two killers.
They're in prison now.
So, Dorothy Stang is my hero.
She worked all her life to help people and to protect the forest, and she died for that.
I think she was great.
Girl: Where can we find out more about her?
Pete: Erm, well, they made a film about her in 2008.
It's called 'They Killed Sister Dorothy'.

- Play the puppet with your group and take the video on it
- Edit then publish your work
- Send the paper slide video on your social media

An unusual hobby
Claire Williams is 15. She's from Wales. Her friends play volleyball and go to the cinema. They like swimming and dancing. But Claire doesn't. She has an unusual hobby: beekeeping. She's got four beehives. She isn't sure, but she thinks she's got about 40,000 bees. In the spring, this is a typical Sunday for Claire:
7.30: Claire gets up. She has breakfast with her parents.
8.30: Claire puts on her special clothes and goes out into the garden. She feeds the bees with sugar and water. She sometimes takes photos of the bees, too.
11.00: Claire's friends Hannah and Kate come round. They don't go near the hives. 'We enjoy watching Claire with the bees,' they say. 'But we're a bit scared of them! 'Claire talks to her friends for a while. Then Hannah and Kate say goodbye, and Claire goes back to the bees.
1.15: It's lunchtime. Claire likes telling her family about bees. 'They fly 80,000 kilometers to make one kilo of honey!' she says. 'And they visit about three million flowers!
3.00: In the afternoon, Claire stays in her room. She loves reading about bees on the internet or in books. In the summer, Claire's bees produce about 40 kilos of honey. Claire takes the honey to a little shop and sells it. She doesn't spend the money, because she wants to buy more beehives!

Erin Brockovich
Erin Brockovich, an American woman, was born in Kansas. She studied at a business college for a year, then she moved to southern California and married a restaurant manager.In 1990, when she was thirty years old, she was in a car accident. A law company helped her after the accident, and later she started to work for them. Her job was to organise papers. One day Erin realised that there were lots of papers about some very sick people in a place called Hinkley. She started to look for more information about the town. Erin worked very hard for five years. She visited lots of sick people in Hinkley and listened to their stories. All the people lived near a big Pacific Gas and Electric factory and she discovered that there was a chemical called chromium in the local water. It was from the factory and Erin believed that the people were sick because of the chromium in their drinking water. She planned to help them. Erin and her boss started a law case against the Pacific Gas and Electricity company. The company wasn't happy about this. They didn't agree that the people were ill because of the water, but in 1996 the judge ordered Pacific Gas and Electric to pay the people in Hinkley $500,000 each (there were 600 sick people, so that was $333 million in total). In 2000, there was a film about Erin Brockovich. Julia Roberts played Erin and the film was very successful. Now Erin is famous, she has her own company and she gives talks all over the world.

A PRESENTATION ABOUT A WELL-KNOWN PERSON
1. BRAINSTORMING
- Find texts that give information about people. Quickly read through these texts again.
- Think of a well-known person you want to find out about. Think about: recent activity you have seen on TV or read about.
- Work in a group and ask one student to take notes.
- Brainstorm ideas to decide who you will do your project on.
- What do you know about this person and what do you want to find out?
2. RESEARCH
With a partner or on your own, find as much as possible about a person that you are working on, use the internet, or look up in the books or magazines in the library or at home. The questions to think about:
- When was she/he born?
- What you can find out on his/her childhood?
- What his/her biggest success?
- Why this person so successful?
- What kind of person is he or she?
3. PRESENTATION
In your group, put together all the information you have, decide how you will organize your presentation for example:
- Start with showing the poster
- Take it in turn to present the facts about the person
- Finish your presentation with each member of your group saying what they admire most about the person.
