1.7 SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
The Simple Present Tense is used to express routine activities, daily habits, repeated actions, general facts, and permanent situations. It tells us about activities that happen regularly or repeatedly. The basic pattern is Subject + Verb 1 (base form). For he, she, it, or singular nouns, the verb usually ends with -s or -es.
The most common time signals used in the Simple Present Tense are every morning, every afternoon, every evening, every day, every week, every month, every year, every hour, every other day, every other week, every other month, every Monday, every Tuesday, every Wednesday, every Thursday, every Friday, every Saturday, every Sunday, always, usually, often, sometimes, seldom, rarely, and never.
Examples of affirmative sentences are: We attend class every day. You brush your teeth twice a day. She cooks rice every morning. They buy a house every year. It eats meat every day. Anton studies English every evening. Dewi and Anton watch television every evening.
To make negative sentences, use do not (don't) with I, you, we, they, and does not (doesn't) with he, she, it, or singular nouns. The main verb returns to its base form.
Examples: We do not attend class every day. You do not brush your teeth twice a day. She does not cook rice every morning. They do not buy a house every year. It does not eat meat every day. Anton does not study English every evening. Dewi and Anton do not watch television every evening.
