The Legend of Lake Toba
A long time ago in North Sumatra, there lived a young man named Toba. He was an ordinary fisherman who lived alone in a small hut. One day, while fishing in the river, he caught a beautiful golden fish. To his surprise, the fish turned into a beautiful woman. She told Toba that she was cursed and could only be freed if she married a man who promised never to reveal her true identity. Toba agreed, and they lived happily together.
After some years, the couple had a son named Samosir. Samosir was a curious and energetic boy, but sometimes he was lazy and stubborn. His mother often reminded him not to be disobedient, while his father expected him to help with daily chores.
One day, Samosir refused to deliver lunch to his father who was working in the field. Toba was very angry and shouted at him, accidentally revealing that Samosir was “the son of a fish.” Samosir was shocked and ran back home to his mother. His mother was deeply hurt because Toba had broken his promise.
The woman told Samosir to run to the hills. Soon after, a heavy rain fell and the water rose quickly, flooding the valley. The flood formed a huge lake, which is now known as Lake Toba. In the middle of the lake, there is an island called Samosir Island, named after their son.
